What Is It?

Electrical Part under Cover between Pass. Seat and Door

On my 83S:

On the passenger side under the carpeted cover that is along side the seat (between the seat and the door) there is an electrical part that looks like a soleniod. There is visible copper wire wrapped around this part and there are 2 red wires tying into it. What is this thing?
