A/C Compressor Bearing Noise

A/C Compressor Bearing Noise

The a/c clutch makes noise after I've been driving a while (a/c off). When I turn the a/c on the noise goes away. Noise sounds like bad bearings or something. Can anything be done short of replacing the whole compressor?
Thanks,

The compressor has a round snoot sticking out of the front. The V-belt pulley has a bearing pressed into it that fits over this snoot. The bearing is easily replaceable, and does NOT require discharging of the freon to remove and replace (but it is a tight fit between the radiator and the compressor!).

Most likely it is just the bearing which is replaceable.
