Harness Installation

Harness Installation

I would like to install a racing harness (4 or 5 points seat belts) in my '88 5sp. I am sliding around and hanging onto the steering wheel when I am on the tracks. I reckon I may be able to shave a few more seconds off my time if I am bukle in properly and concentrate on steering/driving. I am thinking of trying out the belts first before changing to racing seat. If the belts works I may not need the seat.

I would like to find out where the mounting points for the belts could be.

TIA

I installed a five pt. harness in my GT, and I only had to drill one hole for the inside lap belt. For the submarine belt I was able to fit the eye bolt and a large washer through a hole on the seat's motor support bracket. The outside lap belt mounts to the eye bolt that replaces the bolt that anchors the OEM lap belt. The sholder harnesses attach to the belt holder sold by DEVEK which mounts onto the rear shock tower. OED. YMMV.

I just did this install on my 1984 928S. Bought a pair of Auto Pro Racing Systems Harnesses from Racers Wholesale. The lap belts mounted to the two OEM seat belt mount points (side of tunnel and base of B pillar). I used the Devek shock tower mounts for the shoulder belts. Mounted the crotch strap to a hole in one of the brackets under the sport seats (conviniently centered). Looks great in red contrasting with my black leather interior and really holds your position.

I have just purchased a 5-point harness with Devek shock tower mounts to install this weekend. I want to keep the stock 3 point recoil belt as well if possible as my car is a daily driver. Can anyone give me some tips on installation or some links to pictures of the harness mounting points installed. I guess the lap belt will mount to the stock bolts but not sure on the centre anti-submarine belt. Do you have to drill into the floorpan?

Kind regards

I have a 5-point set up on my car, and did drill 3 holes in the floor. I left the stock belt alone and added three eye bolt that the new belts attach to. I also used the DEVEK shock tower mounts.

I put up some pictures at:

I was able to install the 5 pt. harness without having to drill but one hole, and that one was for the inboard seat-belt mount. I used a hole in the seat motor mount as the attaching point for the submarine belt.

The nice features about using it are: the submarine belt moves in unison with the seat, so once it is adjusted it need not be changed, and (of course) for each harness there is one less hole to drill through the floor. YMMV.

That's a neat idea for the sub belt. I'm using this tunnel side seat belt mount kit from Brey-Krause for the inboard side and it works well in my S4: http://www.bkauto.com/r9001.html Using it along with Ed's method for mounting the sub belt means no holes drilled. I use snap ends on my lap belts so that they can be easily removed. For the outside mounting point I used an eyebolt from RacerWholesale which has the same thread size as the factory mounting bolt. http://www.racerwholesale.com (follow the link for Harnesses, and then Harness Mounting Hardware) I kept the stock 3pt harness installed.

Note that sometime between '83 and '88 the inboard seat belt mounting point was changed from being a hole tapped into the tunnel ('83) to actually mounting to the seat ('88). I suspect that the Brey-Krause kit will work for both configurations, but I haven't tried it yet.

Also, early model cars with manual seats do not have a brace that connects the slider rails on either side of the seat like electric seats do, so in those cases you'll probably be forced to drill a hole in the floorboard for the sub belt. Make sure you get a backup plate and large washers in order to spread the load of the bolt you put through the floor. RacerWholesale also sells these backup plates and washers in the harness mounting hardware of their website.

One final note: the mounting ends of a belt must be mounted parrallel to the direction that the belt is pulling. I.e. you can not mount the mounting end flat against the floor (horizontally) and have the belt pulling vertically. The instructions that come with the Devek harness hooks specifically show how to
configure the mounting ends.

I used the Devek shock tower mounts and the seat belt mounting points on the side of the center console and the bottom of the B pillar. There is a hole in the frame of the seat that provided a convenient mount for the anti-dive belt. I was thinking of keeping the OEM for street use but after living with the harness I removed them. I then used the shoulder belt loop points to mount a Stable Energies harness bar.

A harness bar for our cars!? Do you have a link or contact info? Was the bar actually designated for another model but just happens to fit the 928?

I'm using a sternum strap to keep the shoulder harnesses together since they naturally want to pull apart given the shape of the stock seats. A harness bar would definitely improve the situation.

The Stable Energies Harness Bar is actually for the 944/968. I was able to get it to fit by using longer bolts. I got it from Tweeks. It was in their catalog around the beginning of this year. I haven't seen it in their latest catalogs though. And you are correct that with the stock seats a sternum strap or harness bar is required for proper fit.

This bar is available for $99.00 at http://www.stable-energies.com/stable/shoulder.html
Which model did you use?
